Velvet Sofa Fabric: A Buyer’s Guide
Velvet instantly makes a sofa feel luxurious. But not all velvets are the same, here is how to choose one that looks beautiful and lasts.
What makes velvet, velvet?
Velvet has a dense, short pile, tiny cut fibres standing upright, which gives it its signature softness and the way it catches light.
Types of upholstery velvet
- Plush velvet, smooth, uniform pile with a soft sheen
- Crushed velvet, pressed pile for a shimmering, textured look
- Textured / embossed velvet, patterns pressed or woven into the pile
- Matte velvet, low sheen for a modern, understated finish
Is velvet durable for everyday use?
Modern upholstery velvets are made for real homes. Look for a dense pile and good rub count performance for family sofas. Velvet’s tight weave also has no loops, so it resists snagging.
Colours that shine in velvet
Jewel tones, emerald, sapphire, wine, mustard, show velvet’s depth best. Soft blush, sage and greige work beautifully in calmer interiors.
Caring for velvet
- Brush lightly in the direction of the pile
- Rotate cushions to keep wear even
- Blot spills straight away with a dry cloth
- Steam gently to lift crushed areas
